First Generation Review This week, I watched a documentary on YouTube called First Generation which is an award earning documentary by Blair Underwood. First Generation is about four different high school students from different backgrounds who tried to break out of the cycle of poverty and help their families and their communities by getting a college education. I think that this documentary is relevant to my paper on Tiger Parenting to a certain extent because the struggles of being a First Generation college student can sometimes be shared with Asian American students. The documentary follows an inner city athlete, waitress, a daughter of field works, and warrior dancer. One of the most important stories in the video to me was when I watching one student going to school and he find out that he is on honor roll. When asked about college applications, he said that he didn't apply to anything so far but is planning on getting in college applications this weekend. However, he d...

#3 Research Question and 3 Academic Sources

What is your current version of your research question? How does "tiger parenting" affect the life of a college student? Resources: Raleigh, Elizabeth & Kao, Grace. (2010). Do Immigrant Minority Parents Have More Consistent College Aspirations For Their Children?. Social Science Quarterly. 91. 1083-1102. 10.1111/j.1540-6237.2010.00750.x. Explains that immigrant parents are more idealistic and positive about their children's futures and encourage them to go to college throughout their childhoods. Shin, M. & Wong, Y Joel. (2013). Beyond the Tiger Mom: Asian American parenting and parent-child relationships. Parenting: Challenges, Practices and Cultural Influences. 103-122.  Explains how Asian American college students are more likely to have conflicts with their parents regarding careers, identities, & education choices which can lead to cognitive inflexibility and to more substance use than the average college students Ghosh A, Fouad NA, ...

#2 Scouting the Territory

I think I have changed what I want to do. When I was looking on Google scholar, I found an article about international students and how they experience more mental illness than the average college student. I have a friend who's an international student and she said that she has a lot of problems with her identity because she's not Chinese enough to talk to her Chinese friends anymore, but she's also not fully American. I think this topic is really interesting because it's already hard to find your place in college let alone as an immigrant. I'm really passionate about mental health in general and I have read some books about the rising rates of depression and anxiety among people my age. I would love to write a research topic about that but I'm not sure how to make it more interesting or dimensional.  I didn't really see any opposing sides when exploring this topic so I definitely want to look more into it. Books and scholarly articles that seem importa...

#1 Ideas for My Final Paper

Hi everyone! I am most interested in the following topics: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Joining Greek Life  I am in a sorority and even though I love it, I wonder if joining it made me lost focus. In one of the articles we read, they said sororities and socializing usually go in conjunction with easier majors, and recently I have had to switch out of the pharmacy program in pursuit of something easier so I can balance my time better. I feel like I get caught up in the life of the sorority I'm in even when it's not healthy.  Multicultural Greek Life  I'm in an Asian interest sorority, and I would love to explore something related to MGC.  Hazing and Pledge Processes in Greek Life It would be really cool to research and learn about hazing and different pledge processes and how they affect students. Asian Parents and Getting into College Some sort of spin-off on tiger parenting would be pretty interesting as well. I think a lot of my Asian Americ...
